University of Pikeville-Elliott School of Nursing has announced the May 2016 class of 32 nursing graduates achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The school of nursing’s NCLEX-RN pass rate for 2015 was also 100 percent. UPIKE nursing graduates remain above the national and state averages on NCLEX-RN. The 2015 national pass average was 85 percent; the Kentucky pass average was 90 percent. The NCLEX-RN is a standardized exam that each state board of nursing uses to determine that a candidate is safely prepared for entry-level nursing practice. “We are so proud of our graduates,” said Mary R. Simpson, RN, Ph.D., dean of the Elliott School of Nursing. “I also want to commend the nursing faculty – Canda Byrne, Karen Damron, Dwyna Dean, Dawnetta Marcum, Linda Taylor, Tiffany Wright and our adjunct instructors – who go the extra mile to individualize the education our students receive.” Simpson reflected, “How fitting that with the program’s 32nd graduating class, the Class of 2016, was the largest class with 32 graduates who have now become 32 new RN’s.” Upon passage of the NCLEX, graduates are licensed for immediate employment as a registered nurse. The majority of the 2016 graduates are employed by Pikeville Medical Center with others employed at Tug Valley ARH, and in Lexington, Bowling Green and in Michigan. An associate degree in nursing from UPIKE can be completed in four semesters. The Elliott School of Nursing also offers a nationally accredited RN-BSN program for associate degree RNs to achieve a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
