Wednesday, March 2, UPIKE hosted its weekly What’s Up Wednesday event. The new band, Hope Beyond Boston, performed for the first time. Band members include guitarist, Clifton Blackburn, a sophomore; lead singer, Jesse Plourde, sophomore; drummer Dalton Hunt, freshman; and on piano was Corbin Bentley, sophomore. The band played covers along with some original songs such as “Smile Again.” “This song is about trying to make a girl happy,” said Plourde. “Outlaw” was another original song performed by the band. “This song is like a Kentucky Blues anthem and one of my favorites,” said Blackburn. The band members have all been playing music for quite a while and thought the band was a good idea. “The band started out as an acoustic thing with just a few people playing around and then we decided to make a band,” said Plourde. The band’s short-term goals are to hopefully play in some local gigs around Pikeville. They also hope to play at a few more What’s Up Wednesday events. You can help them by following them on social media, “Hope Beyond Boston.” The band gets its name from the lead singer, Plourde, and guitarist, Blackburn. Both are from Massachusetts. “It’s a name that reminds me that it is okay to move from home to an unfamiliar place,” said Blackburn.
