Baseball Bears bomb doubleheader

The UPIKE Bears’ baseball team took a trip to St. Andrews University Feb. 5-7 in Laurinburg, NC.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Bears seemed to have the game in control through the first five innings. The offense jumped out to a 7-1 lead and junior pitcher, AJ Carkner, only gave up one run. In the sixth inning, the Bears brought in junior pitcher, James Brooks. St. Andrews got the bats rolling and tied the game. With the game tied, the Bears looked to freshman Aaron Hedgecock. The freshman did his job and kept the game tied to end the sixth. The Bears couldn’t manage a run in the top of the seventh inning, losing on a walk-off hit by St. Andrews.
The second game of the doubleheader lacked the excitement of the first game. St. Andrews seemed to take the momentum from the first game and roll with it. The score quickly jumped to the Bears trailing 0-3. UPIKE couldn’t rally a comeback, only scoring one run throughout the game and eventually giving up one more run, making a final score of 4-1. The game ended after five innings, due to darkness. Dalton Dahley, sophomore pitcher, took the loss in the second game.
“We learned a lot about our team this weekend and learned what we need to improve on this coming week for our next series,” said junior outfielder Connor Osborne.
The Bears have high hopes for this season, as they look to carry over last year’s conference tournament success.
