SGA amends student constitution

The University of Pikeville’s student body was invited to an emergency meeting on April 7 where the issue of an outdated student government constitution was brought to the table. The intent of the meeting was not only to point out a few flaws in the current constitution, but to create a committee of students interested in redrafting it.
In the meeting, juniors Collan McCoy, SGA treasurer and Katie Halsey, head of student activities committee, stressed the importance of moving forward with the project in a timely manner. The semester is coming to a close and the constitution needs to be adapted prior to next year’s student government officials taking office.
If the project is not complete by the end of this semester, McCoy says the elected officials will not be permitted to take office until the fall. Without elected officials, there will be no access to the money required to fund “Welcome Week.”
“It’s not about me. It’s not about the SGA officers right now. It’s about what we can do to make this constitution the best it can be,” said Halsey, who has been working on this idea for some time.“Everything (the SGA does) is for the students. So, if we’re not doing things the way you want them done, there’s no purpose in us being here.”
All students present came to a unanimous decision to re-draft the constitution. In order to adopt changes to the constitution, there is a minimum of 200 required signatures from the student body. Those interested in the committee or learning more about the student government are encouraged to contact the SGA officials.
