Rick Newsom will be the featured speaker for the University of Pikeville’s Coleman College of Business Speakers and Leadership Series. Newsom will speak on the topic “Monday Morning Leadership.” The event is set for Monday, April 13, at 11 a.m. in Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial Building.
Newsom is the executive vice president for Community Trust Bancorp and president of the Eastern Kentucky region for Community Trust Bank Inc. He began his banking career as a teller at the Virgie Branch with Pikeville National Bank upon completing his bachelor’s degree from Pikeville College.
His achievements during a 37-year career in banking include starting a new branch, which became one of the most profitable branches in the company, while being one of the top retail lenders.
Newsom was named vice president and senior retail lender in the Pikeville market in 1994, growing the local area loan portfolio more than 50 percent in three years. In 1997, he became senior vice president of corporate retail and managed the corporate retail portfolio, responsible for risk management, growth and profitability. Within five years, the home equity portfolio grew more than 300 percent while he oversaw the statewide automobile dealer-lending program, one of the most profitable lines of business in the company.
Newsom began his current role in 2002 where he is responsible for market share growth and profitability of 25 branches located in the five Eastern Kentucky markets including Pikeville, Tug Valley, Whitesburg, Hazard, and Floyd and Johnson counties. Since 2002, the region has been consistent in both growth and profitability.
During his banking tenure, Newsome attended the University of Virginia earning a graduate degree in banking and finance. He also has certifications in various leadership and management training programs.
