The Pikeville Review is a journal of contemporary Appalachian literature. Amanda Jo Runyon, instructor of developmental English, and Dr. Charles Johnson, assistant professor of English, co-edit the journal. The journal is full of modern Appalachian fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
“Appalachia has a strong literary tradition,” Runyon said, “and there are so many people creating fine work today. The purpose of The Pikeville Review is to celebrate that and to give people a new platform for their stories.”
The Pikeville Review was founded in 1987 and went on a hiatus in 2007 until this year. This is the first issue since then. As of now, The Pikeville Review is an annual publication.
“In the future, we plan to try and get a fall and a spring publication,” Johnson said.
The editors put out a call for submissions nationwide and had an overwhelming response. The journal features some well-known Appalachian authors as well as many new and emerging writers. Some of the authors from the review will be coming to campus to do a reading later this month.
