Softball Starts Season with Winning Record

Since spring is just around the corner, softball season has begun. Head Coach Christine Sheridan and the University of Pikeville softball team have taken full advantage of the recent warm weather. Starting the season with a doubleheader at Bryan College, the Bears suffered two losses. The team quickly bounced back from those games and has won their last four games, including their first doubleheader at home.
“The first two games started out rough with a lot of strikeouts and very little walks. The last two games, we flipped those stats with 21 hits and 14 walks against West Virginia Tech,” Sheridan said.
On March 9, the Bears hosted a tri-match as their opening series adding two wins to the record, one against Ohio Christian (4-1) and one against Rio Grande (6-2). Senior Sydney Morris led the team against OCU with a career-high 11-strikeouts. Along with this impressive performance, third baseman Breana Pineda scored a solo home run against the Trailblazers.
On Sunday, the Bears traveled to Charleston, W. Va., for a doubleheader facing the West Virginia Tech (WVT) Golden Bears. Scoring a total of 15 runs against WVT, the Bears had a productive day offensively landing 21 hits and 14 walks.
The Bears seem to have a new focus this season and look to excel when tournament time rolls around. All game statistics and records are online at www.upikebears.edu.
