SSWA to raise awareness for homelessness

Social work is a dynamic, noble and altruistic profession with a rich history of commitment to the needs of others, especially the most vulnerable in our society. The social work profession is characterized by a steadfast commitment to social justice in the service of empowering individuals, families and communities to meet their needs, and that is what UPIKE’s Student Social Work Association (SSWA) bases its sponsored activities around – helping give back to the community.
The SSWA has participated in numerous activities throughout the fall semester. One of the first events members raised money for was a raffle to help raise awareness about domestic violence. SSWA sold chances for a basket that included everything from UPIKE accessories to tickets to the Jenny Wiley Theatre. The association raised $183.30 for domestic violence.
SSWA also prepared a sleeping bag and blanket drive for the homeless shelter this semester, which was successful. The SSWA group members are currently in the process of conducting a canned food drive for the homeless and women’s shelter.
Members plan a “sleep-out” to raise awareness for homeless victims and the need for coats for kids, with the help of Rob Musick, campus chaplain. During the sleep-out, members of SSWA will be sleeping in Benefactors Plaza to make others realize the consequences of being homeless. The SSWA hopes this will make homelessness more real to those who live on campus. The sleep-out will take place Thursday, Nov. 20.
