Andrew Reed, assistant professor of film and media arts, showcased a feature film at the Heartland Film Festival called “I’m With Phil.”
Reed started the production in 2011. It is about Reed’s hometown of Phil Campbell, Ala. He invited Phil Campbells from all around the country to his town to film the movie.
Filming was cut short when a tornado ripped through Phil Campbell causing more than 20 deaths and thousands of dollars worth of damage. Thinking that this tragedy would stop the filming of his documentary, the Phil Campbell’s came together to raise money for the town and the filming continued.
Getting his film into the Heartland festival was a struggle. He explained that the festivals choose movies based on how well it will show in that particular area.
He said, “Getting a feature length film is very difficult to get into festivals.”
Reed said that his film was screened three times. His first screening had 100 people. Reed said that this was not a bad number because he has not had time to promote the film.
Reed is now trying to get his film more known. He is working with a group from California, so he can get cut down the time to be shown on Alabama public television.
Overall, Reed said that he did enjoy the festival and plans on doing many more. “I’m with Phil” can be seen on Reed’s website imwithphil.com.
