During the week of fall break, the UPIKE volleyball team accomplished a sucessful week with three wins and one loss. On Sept. 29, the first and only loss of the week occurred against Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, Ky., with a 0-3 set.
Sydney Hall, sophomore and middle blocker for the Bears, said, “This loss was a bad way to start off the week, but I believe it made us push ourselves to start trying harder. I like to think it woke us up and made us realize that we need to start focusing more on our game.”
Hall proved to be right as the Bears took three victories for the rest of the week. Thursday, Oct. 2, the Bears beat Midway on their home court with a 3-2 set. Two games were played Saturday at UPIKE against Alice Lloyd, 3-0 win, and Johnson, 3-0 win, which left the women with a 3-1 record for the week.
UPIKE volleyball continued the next week with three more games. Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Bears fell to Berea in a 3-0 loss. Thursday was also a hard 3-0 loss as they faced Lindsey Wilson again at UPIKE. The Bears came back and ended the week with a 3-1 win against Cumberland and ended the week with a 1-2 record.
The starters are usually Audri Ray, Chelsea Staples, Sydney Morris, Sydney Hall, Haley Esquival, and Caitlynn Pfaadt. The line-up between the left sides have been switched up lately during the games between Conner Cook, Haley Esquival, and Rachel Murphy.
Savannah Looney, freshman, said, “Our team keeps getting stronger with every win and every loss as well. I can’t wait to see how much we approve by the end of the season.”
The Bears’ volleyball winning record is now 13-11.
