0By Dario Bennet
UPIKE Bears’ volleyball team went 0-2 recently with losses to Campbellsville Tigers (4-7, 1-3 MSC) and St. Catharine College (15-4, 3-1 MSC).
Against Campbellsville, all five of the sets were close. UPIKE took a 21-20 lead, but then the Bears’ offense stumbled and Campbellsville scored five straight points to win the set. In the second set the Tigers ended up taking a 24-21 lead before winning the set, and going up 2-0 on the Bears. Holding on for life in the third set tied at 21-21, the Bears finally caught a break as they got four straight points from Campbellsville errors to win the set and get back in the game. UPIKE easily won in the fourth set, taking a big lead before eventually winning the set and forcing Campbellsville to play a fifth set with a 25-21 win. After a poor start to the fifth set, the Bears tied it up at 15 before Campbellsville went on a run to win the game.
Against red-hot St. Catharine, the Patriots got off to a fast start as the Bears struggled to get anything going. They lost the game 3-0 (25-14, 25-14 and 25-4).
UPIKE volleyball will get its next chance to snap a five-match losing streak on Thursday, Sept. 24 when it travels to Ohio to play Shawnee State.
