Abdon strikes for UPIKE
0Staff Report
Kaitlyn Abdon scored in the 88th minute and the University of Pikeville women’s soccer team held on to win its third Mid-South Conference game since 2009 with a 1-0 decision against St. Catharine on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Amos Complex.
The Bears are off to their best start in program history with a 4-0 overall record and 1-0 mark in league play. The previous bests were a pair of 3-0-1 starts in 2011 and 2009. UPIKE will get a chance to make it 5-0 when it hosts Warren Wilson (N.C.) at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.
Jasmine Davis played a perfect cross over to Abdon in the game’s final stages that she calmly collected and finished for the game winner. Abdon fired a game-high three shots with the late goal being her only shot on goal. UPIKE and the Patriots (2-3-1, 1-1 MSC) both took nine total shots, including two each on frame.
Chelsea Schulte only had to make two saves on the day to record her third shutout of the season. The senior collected both of the stops in the first half before completing her clean sheet without much action in the final 45 minutes. St. Catharine keeper Emily Belt finished with one save and the one goal allowed.
Fouls went 8-6 in favor of the Bears, while corner kicks were 7-3 for St. Catharine. But in the end it was Abdon’s heroics that mattered as UPIKE starts off its MSC season 1-0.
