How religion can be an uplifting major

To some, religion just means going to church, but to others, it’s a career. What exactly is in it for those who choose religion as their major in college?
The University of Pikeville has a strong religion program with a knowledgeable staff of professors, but few students major in religion. UPIKE only has four students majoring in religion and only 35 students have earned a degree in religion since 1996.
One possible reason the numbers aren’t higher is that students don’t really know what they can gain from it.
Religion offers numerous job opportunities such as teaching, writing in newspaper columns, and participating in politics. It’s not necessary to attain additional education in order to have a fulfilling career. The average salary for a religion major is $69,150 a year.
“The study of religion generally provides a view into faith traditions and how they inform, impact, influence, and stand as foundations both individuals and communities and how the live out everyday life. The specific study of the Bible gives students insight into ancient texts that for many serve as a guide, witness, and direction for life,” said Donna Dessarro-Raynal, religion professor.
The study of religion has also impacted students that chose to major in it both physically and mentally.
“Majoring in religion for me has been something like a faith edition of boot camp. Take everything you think you know about various religions even your own and be prepared to deconstruct it and start over,” said senior Sarah Smith.
Smith also noted that the study of religion is a world apart from the practice of religion. Her experience in the program has her graduating with much more than that, including the foundations, tools, and intentions to continue studies at a graduate level.
