Saturday, April 5, the University of Pikeville women’s soccer team proved that all its training was worthwhile, when it defeated NJCAA division 1, Patrick Henry Junior College (PHJC), at a friendly spring scrimmage at Bob Amos sports complex.
The Lady Bears gave a friendly welcome to their opponent but everything changed when the whistle blew. During first half, the UPIKE ladies managed to achieve a 2-0 lead, securing their path to victory. Kaitlyn Abdon and Makayla Mendoza scored the goals for UPIKE.
The second half was performed as smoothly as the first one. The Lady Bears kept their confidence, intensity and determination high. The final goal came from Chelsee Schulte in the last 15 minutes of game play, bringing the score to 4-0 for the University of Pikeville women’s soccer.
“The girls played amazing today. Everyone performed; everyone did their part right. This was good practice for our lady bears, and we are more ready the ever for our upcoming season,” Paulina Ruiz, freshman midfielder, said.
