Students and Faculty attend ACA Summit
0UPIKE sent a large group of faculty and students to this year’s annual Appalachian College Association Summit held in Knoxville, Tenn. Oct. 24-26 at the Knoxville Convention Center. The main focus was “Collaboration in a teaching environment.” The summit this year focused on the willingness of a variety of campuses and individuals to collaborate and connect.
The faculty members that attended the summit were: Amanda Runyon, James Michael King, Cindy Clark, Sydney England, Basil Clark, Donna DeSarro, Jane Hammons, Robert Arts, David Roby, Ella Smith, Lynn Hamilton, Chandra Massner, LeAnn Epling, Johnny Fleming, Theresa Dawahare, Thomas Hess and Brigitte Anderson.
“I did a presentation over information fluency with Ella Smith and Jane Hammons about how we can help students learn and apply library resources in everyday life as well as within their future jobs,” Roby explained.
Two students, Hannah Lucas and Katie Bates joined Epling and Massner to discuss, an independent research course they took last year. Epling and Massner presented “Teaching Undergraduate Research in a Collaborative Environment.”
Other UPIKE presentations included “Appalachia across the curriculum,” presented by Runyon, King, Clark, England and Clark. Hamilton presented on “Wikipedia in the classroom: Demon or ally?” Clark and Doug Lange presented “War wounded: let the healing begin.” Runyon, Fleming and Dawahare presented “Active learning in the changing developmental classroom,” and Arts presented “The Mini-Zam: formative assessment for the physics classroom.”
“We have been participating since the first annual ACA Summit. This is a great opportunity of communicate with other faculty and communicate with other colleges. The Summit focuses on teaching and learn- ing,” Dean Hess said.
