A student came up with an idea about playing drums and telling a story on campus. Several students and faculty at UPIKE have formed a drum circle known as “Goat Slap” as an activity within the community. The name is from the drums being made out of goat skin. The group meets outside of Condit Hall at “The Rock” and has gotten the attention of many passersbys. “I was approached two years ago from a student wanting to start this,” Professor, Tyler Ralston, said. “It was a great idea but fell through and was brought back and was started.” Those who attended among students, faculty, campus safety they have described the group sessions as a reliever from stress. They also say they have a spiritual feeling to them. The drum circle meets every week on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the rock. During the colder times, Rob Musick, Chaplain, has offered his Chapel to continue the drum circle sessions. The Drum Circle is opened to anyone in the community. Some instruments will be provided or even to just sit in and watch. However, drumming is not the only part of the sessions. Dancing and fire twirling are also involved and any other type of creativity is encouraged. For more information, contact Ralston, or come join the circle on Thursday.
