SGA switches to Senate system

As you may have noticed, many things have and are changing amongst the UPIKE community, both on the administration and student side. One of the major changes this year is the institutional change of the UPIKE undergraduate Student Government Association (SGA). SGA is an organization by students to represent students and make sure their voices are heard by the administration of UPIKE. In the past, SGA has been modeled in a General Assembly system—where all who show up to a meeting are members. However, beginning this semester, in order to provide more leadership opportunities for the student body of UPIKE, SGA is switching to a Senate style system. Although the election dates for the Senate have yet to be chosen, any University of Pikeville undergraduate student is eligible to run. All candidates must have no conduct violations, must be in good academic standing, and must be able to attend all SGA meetings (unless a valid excuse is given). The SGA Executive Board (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer Affairs, Clubs and Organizations Affairs Representative, Academic Affairs Representative, and Social Affairs Representative) are preparing to travel to Washington D.C., at the end of the month to attend the American Student Government Association (ASGA) conference. It is a national conference designed to help SGAs across the nation to improve their governing styles and help impact their campuses. “Currently, a lot of students do not know what SGA is or what we exactly do. They know of us but aren’t sure if they should get involved, or they aren’t fully aware of the duties or authority that we have when it comes to fulfilling their needs or advocating for them,” senior Amber Mills, UPIKE undergraduate SGA President said.
