UPIKE hosts Batey Banquet for mission trip

Saturday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m., there will be a Batey Banquet to support the KYCOM Medical Mission Team in its trip to the Dominican Republic. It is free to everyone who would like to attend, but donations are encouraged.
The money donated supports the medical mission trip.
“It is expensive to go on these trips, and we take $7,000 worth of medicine to help thousands of people who live and work in villages in the sugar cane fields in the Dominican Republic,” said Stephanie Jones, second-year KYCOM student. “The first year KYCOM students always go on this mission trip, and I went last year. It always takes a lot of fundraising so we are helping the first year students get a head start.”
At the dinner, the second-year medical students will be sharing their stories as well as missionaries from Go Mission who station in the Dominican 10 months out of the year. The two missionaries who will be speaking are John Martinez and Doloris Norman.
“They do a lot more than just missions in Dominican Republic, and they will speak more about their missions at the dinner,” said Jones.
It is a Batey style dinner meaning it will consist of beans, rice, fried chicken, and fresh fruit. “Batey is the type of food that the locals eat in the DR, mostly beans and rice,” said Jones.
The suggested donation is $25 per seat, but the dinner is free. You must RSVP by emailing Jones at stephaniejones@upike.edu. It is a semi-formal event. There will also be a silent auction.
