On Feb. 6, the Student Government Association (SGA) had its bi-monthly meeting. At this meeting, the Senate voted to allocate $1,000 to the Black Student Union (BSU) to attend the inaugural Kentucky Black Student Union Conference in Louisville, Ky; voted to approve a new Secretary/Treasurer; and gave their opinion to Dean of Students Justin Owens on some possible changes in the future.
The BSU will be traveling to the inaugural Kentucky Black Student Union at the University of Louisville on April 20. This conference will include all 15 universities/colleges that participate in the Kentucky BSU to come together and listen to many different speakers and presenters on leadership, challenges to the African American community today, and how to get more students involved in the BSU program at their school.
“I am really excited for the first Kentucky BSU conference. I hope to host the next one here at UPIKE,” said William Wheeler, freshman, BSU President. Senior Kayla Campbell stepped down as Secretary/Treasurer. The Senate voted to approve SGA President, Amber Mills’ nomination of senior Anna Kowalok to finish the year as Secretary/Treasurer. Owens discussed the possibility of a university kitchen in Spilman Hall and a common room located in Page Hall. Owens also discussed the idea of free academic books to students.
