Get in touch with your spiritual side at weekly drum circle

A couple of years ago, a student came up with an idea about playing drums and telling a story on campus. Several students and faculty at UPIKE have since formed a drum circle known as “Goat Slap” as an activity within the community. The name is from the drums being made out of goat skin. The group meets outside of Condit Hall at “The Rock” and has gotten the attention of many passersbys.
“I was approached two years ago from a student wanting to start this,” Tyler Ralston, associate professor of history, said. “It was a great idea but fell through and was brought back and was started.”
Students, faculty, staff attend and described the group sessions as a stress reliever. They also say the sessions have a spiritual feeling to them. The drum circle meets every week on Thursday at 5 p.m. at “The Rock.” During cold days, Rob Musick, chaplain, has offered the Chapel to be used to continue the drum circle sessions.
Drumming is not the only part of the sessions. Dancing and fire twirling are also involved and any other type of creativity is encouraged.
The drum circle is open to anyone in the community. Some instruments are provided, or you are welcome to sit in and watch.
For more information, contact Ralston, or come join the circle on Thursday.
