The Black Student Union celebrated and dedicated a week to the “I Am Just Me Because…” Movement. BSU and others met with the founders of the movement and discussed how to be an agent of change and what diversity means to everyone on Friday, Oct. 20. Tina Stevens-Culbreath and Rodney Culbreath are the founders of the movement and spoke about how they started the movement. The founders spoke about their personal struggles growing up and what inspired them to keep pushing forward. They also spoke about their own son and his journey to discovering what it meant to be himself. Students were asked individually about what made them into the person they are now. They were also asked about what diversity meant to them and a difficult struggle in their lives that they have overcome. The couple’s goals do not stop at ending bullying, but also push issues such as diversity, inclusion and self-esteem. “I’m Just Me” has evolved from what was once a dream to the movement that UPIKE’s campus was able to witness as BSU dedicated an entire week to it. The president of BSU, William Wheeler, was delighted to have the founders visit and present at the University of Pikeville. Wheeler invited the founders and assisted in the celebration of the movement.
