Tim Roberts, instructor of criminal justice, took his Criminal Justice class and Correction class to the Police Academy at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky., Oct. 18. Students were introduced to the Kentucky Bureau Training, where they have class, interrogate and observe dangerous role-play scenarios. Participants try to figure out how to make the arrest. They also have a telecommunications class; it is a five-week course that is only taught in the state of Kentucky.
The UPIKE students also saw the two-part obstacle course that cadets have to go through. The lower part consists of observing your surroundings. The second part of the obstacle course is kept behind a net that must be unraveled to allow entry. When they get to the end, they go on what’s called the “rope of life,” a big rope they hold to get down.
Physical training instructor Joe Jumper introduced the UPIKE students to the weight room and the physical room. The physical room is filled with mats and dummies for the students to train. He showed the students some of the stances that officers take and said when the cadets are ready to move on to take them down and beat them to finish that training. On Wednesday’s, they have calisthenics training for 27 weeks. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for defensive tactics.
“There is a physical training award you can earn by maxing out the test,” said Jumper.
Tactical expert Roy Jude teaches counter reverse training and weapons expert training. He shows cadets how to use fire arms and safety and what to do in dangerous situations.
