Netflix original show Last Chance U star Brittany Wagner Skyped with UPIKE students at What’s Up Wednesday (WUW) on Sept. 2. The Skype call started at 7 p.m. at the HPE building 7th floor as WUW staff had free pretzels for those who joined. Program Director of Film and Media Arts and Assistant Professor of Film and Media Arts Andrew D. Reed was the one who reached out to Wagner through Twitter and set up the Skype call, so she could talk to student-athletes. “To me, the core message is be more present in life, and be proud in what you do,” said Reed about the message Wagner was trying to send out to the students during the skype call. Wagner told her story as an academic advisor and how she helped many student-athletes improve and be themselves. Though she doesn’t work as an advisor now, she still stays in touch with them. She started a company called 10 Thousand Pencils that lets student-athletes who need help to be successful as people go on to their website and even contact her personally.
