Tuesday, Sept. 26, Ray Krone, a former death row prisoner, presented his story to UPIKE students in Chrisman Auditorium. Accompanied by a member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky (ACLU), Krone spoke to students about his personal experience of being imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and how his life nearly ended on death row.
A veteran of the Air Force, Krone held a position at an Arizona post office until the murder of a young lady at a local bar changed his life. After hours of interrogation, Krone was arrested for the murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a woman with whom he was barely acquainted.
Multiple trials slowly proved Krone’s innocence, and after seven years in prison and three years on death row, he was released with a settlement from the state.
Since his release, Krone travels sharing his story in hopes of proving that the death penalty needs to be abolished.
“We can’t free somebody from the grave,” Krone said.
