Archery is a new sport at UPIKE this year. There are three types of competition, 3D, indoor and outdoor. The scoring for them is different. You get one shot per target in 3D and score each target separately.Indoor is by 18 meters, and outdoor, is in known zones and unknown zones.
Coach Shane Hurt’s son knew about archery through Coach Woods and talked to Coach Hurt and recruited him for this job at University of Pikeville.
Before Hurt came here, he was the coach at the Pikeville High School and had the opportunity to come here to start the program.
“I want to see the program get bigger, to have a girls’ and boys’ archery team,” Hurt said.
He is from Hazard, Ky., and he started shooting bows when he was young and in his personal experience the popularity and equipment has gone through a big change. He has been coaching for 5 years and looks forward to seeing the sport grow bigger in the future.
