The University of Pikeville’s eSports team started off strong with its first two weeks of tryouts. As of last semester, there have been students come and go from the team. The University has even seen a new coach, Kelly Porter. He has been greatly looking forward to taking up the position. Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 5, the members of the UPIKE eSports team committed to two weeks of round robin practice sessions in order to be at their peak performance. Porter was enthusiastic about the students returning and giving it their all. “I’ve been given the honor of giving these students their scholarships, which most will view as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Porter said. Many people are still in the dark on the subject of eSports. Luckily, Porter has always shown a deep interest in the program at UPIKE. “When the previous coach, Eric Vanhoose, left, and I heard he put my name down for a potential new coach, I wanted to accept and show that these students have legitimate skill and deserve as much of a scholarship as any other athlete,” Porter said.
