Fall enrollment down

The University of Pikeville is starting fall semester 2017 with 279 new faces. UPIKE’s first-year student enrollment dropped 50 students from last year. With this drop in student enrollment comes different changes on campus for commuting and on campus students. It brings the student-to-faculty ratio down slightly making a small difference in classroom sizes. This difference allows professors to give more time to students individually. The parking situation, on the other hand, is slightly different. UPIKE’s commuting students increased by 3 percent from last year. This semester, 50 percent of the students commute, and 50 percent are residents. UPIKE’s total undergraduate enrollment for the semester is 1,088 students not including dual credit high school students. This semester brought back 657 students from spring semester 2017. The Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at UPIKE, Meg Sidle, said “”Since 2000 we have intentionally been a residential campus.” UPIKE is a diverse culture in itself. “We have 27 international students on campus this semester,” said Sidle. The most prominent continents are Europe and Central South America.
