E-Sports is expanding its scholarship opportunities to include Blizzard’s newest first-person shooter, Overwatch. Overwatch is a first-person shooter title where teams attempt to capture objectives or defend their points from their opposition. There are a variety of different roles one can play, including Tank (a protector of the group and someone that can absorb high amounts of damage), Offensive (High damage output), Defensive (High damage output, but better from a defensible position), and Support (low damage but offers utility for the team). The team will be competing in TESPA-sponsored tournaments that offer monetary rewards for the university they represent. Nick Collum, a broadcaster for the E-Sports program, will be one of the starting lineup for the Overwatch team. “We need a lot of diversity. We need a broad group of people to go through, to see what their strengths and weaknesses are, to see how they can fit into the team,” Collum said. Most team members are from Kentucky. However, four team members are from West Virginia, New York, Maryland and Columbia. Anyone interested in the program can find applications on the UPIKE athletics website or email Eric VanHoose at EricVanHoose@upike.edu
