UPIKE studies abroad

Have you ever wanted to travel to and live somewhere new? Now is your chance to go and learn about a different culture. At the Global Studies fair held at the campus plaza on Wednesday, Sept. 14, students learned about different places where they could study. There were four opportunities at the event: Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS), Knowledge Exchange Institute (KEI), Spiritual Life, and UPIKE’s faculty-led programs. For all these programs, you do not have to speak another language, other than English, and financial aid applies toward all of these programs except for the Spiritual Life mission trip. KIIS, the most popular booth at the event, offers 25 summer programs that last for an average of four weeks, four winter programs that last an average of two weeks, and four semester-long programs in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Some other locations they offer programs at are Austria, China, Denmark, Paris, Spain, and many more. If you are interested in learning more visit www.kiis.org. UPIKE offers a few miscellaneous programs each year. This year, faculty members are offering trips to Costa Rica and London. The trip to Costa Rica is in May and counts as 4 credit hours in communication or psychology. The trip to London counts as 2 credits for English or Theatre 390. For more information, contact Tim Whittier, John Howie, Chandra Massner, or Jennifer Steigerwalt. Howie’s class combines ecology and psychology. “(It) teaches them to reconstitute the human nature of themselves back into Nature at large. The psyche is just as wild as the wilderness. This is the rewilding of psychology,” Howie said.
