The UPIKE Bears’ tennis teams, men’s and women’s, scored a win against the UVA-Wise Cavaliers Wednesday, March 16. The men achieved a great performance with an overall score of 9-0, as for the women they won 6-3 away from home. UPIKE started off the day with two wins in doubles. Macarena Acuna and Mounia Sami took the first doubles against Bailey Christoforatos and Daria Tyshchenko with a score of 8-4. The second doubles was taken by Thais Bezerra and Cailee Marcum against Mackenzie Lawson and Serena Burgess 8-0. After losing the third doubles, the Bears came back strong with Acuna’s win against Tyshchenko 6-2, 6-1. Following the lead, Bezerra and Hailey Justice sealed the win on third and forth seed, respectively. Bezerra won 6-2, 6-4 against Haley Thacker, as for Justice, she finished the match with a score of 6-4, 6-1 against Marti Gay. After the win was already secured by her teammates, Sami added another victory to the top, beating Christoforatos 7-6 (3), 6-3. Bezerra, one of the seniors of the team, said, “ We are very proud of all the work we have been putting. This is a first in the history of the tennis program. Never before has a team won three matches out of four, and we will keep this up for sure.”
