Women to play Georgetown

Fifth-seeded University of Pikeville will open the 2016 Mid-South Conference Women’s Basketball Championship against No. 4-seed Georgetown at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday in the Frankfort Convention Center. Live video and stats will be available of every game in the tournament at Mid-SouthConference.org, while live audio of UPIKE’s game will be available at UPIKEBears.com.The Bears and Tigers split the regular-season series with UPIKE winning 83-66 at home on Jan. 25 and Georgetown claiming a 75-63 win at home on Feb. 4.
UPIKE is 4-14 all time in the tournament, including a 1-7 record against Georgetown. The Bears have never won the Mid-South Conference Tournament title. Championship play starts on Thursday with four quarterfinal matchups, followed by the semifinals on Saturday and the men’s and women’s finals on Sunday. Shawnee State (Ohio) leads the eight-team field as the No. 1 seed. SSU captured the MSC regular-season title with a 12-2 league record. No. 2-seed Campbellsville and seventh-seeded Cumberlands open the tournament at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Third-seeded Lindsey Wilson faces No. 6-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) in the second quarterfinal at 4 p.m.
Shawnee State meets eighth-seeded St. Catharine at 6 p.m. in the first game of the night session. The quarterfinals conclude at 8 p.m. with UPIKE taking on Georgetown. The tournament’s semifinals are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday with the finals set for 1 p.m. on Sunday. A tiebreaker was administered to determine the second and third seeds of the tournament. Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson tied for second in the conference standings with identical 10-4 marks. After the two teams split during the regular season, Campbellsville earned the No. 2 seed based on the Tigers splitting the season series with top-seeded Shawnee State. The Bears swept Lindsey Wilson during the regular season.
