UPIKE offers self-defense classes

Do you want to learn how to protect yourself? UPIKE is now offering self-defense classes to students. The opportunity began this semester and will be continuing through spring 2015.
Self-defense can be taken as a PED elective for 1 credit hour. For women, the course is PED 151-A, and PED 152-A is offered for men. The course is an eight-week program. The first eight weeks of the semester was focused on teaching women self defense. The last eight has been to teach men. Next semester, the courses will be offered in the same format. Self-defense for women will be offered Friday’s starting Jan. 12 and continuing until spring break. For men, it will begin after the break.
The program is lead by Chief Allen Abshire. He teaches students the proper way to protect and defend themselves, in necessary circumstances. Students learn techniques such as how to strike, block, kick, maneuver around and ground fighting.
“Fighting is a part of life, and you will need to know how to fight and learn discipline, and that’s what you get from a class like this,” said student Ariq Skinner.
It’s a fun class to take, no matter your skill level. Chief will work with you so that you can get to the level of defense you desire. Abshire believes the purpose of the class is to make certain students on campus know how to protect themselves. Campus security cannot be at all places at all times. Knowing self-defense benefits you in the real world when you most likely don’t expect it.
