Freshmen express where they’re from in annual art show

The month of November held numerous opportunities for University of Pikeville students to become more involved with their campus, especially freshmen. These opportunities have included everything from community involvement activities and fundraisers to attending special events located around the campus.
Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., the annual First Year Studies Art show reception was held in the Weber Art Gallery. The reception highlighted poems, collages, and CD’s representing students from the first year studies course, which are displayed around the art gallery. The art pieces were on display until the end of November.
To enhance the first-year experience at UPIKE, this required course is offered to encourage a successful transition to college. This year, the students were assigned to reflect on the poem, “Where I’m From,” by the Kentucky author George Ella Lyon. In the poem, Lyon continually describes her “home” with vivid images, such as, “I am from the dirt under the back porch.” The students had to represent where they were from by choosing to create a collage, poem, or CD that included sound tracks of their life, without outwardly stating which city or state they were from, Emily Romito, director of the first year experience and student activities said.
