UPIKE JV baseball starts playing

It’s the beginning of fall, and at Johnnie LeMaster field in Pikeville, the Junior Varsity baseball team for the UPIKE Bears took the field against the Alice Lloyd Eagles.
The Bears looked solid after five innings with a scoreless 0-0 ball game. The Eagles answered in the 5th inning with their bats to score two runs against the Bears. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bears got a little hope with a shot by Zach Green through the four-hole, but the Eagles’ pitching stayed consistent and the shutout continued. The Bears couldn’t get anything going in the sixth as they grounded out to shortstop with back-to-back fly outs. The Eagles started off the seventh inning with a lead off walk and a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. With good team baseball, the Eagles ended up getting 2 more runs on wild pitches to make it 4-0 Eagles. The Eagles pitching stayed hot as they closed it with a shutout to end the ball game.
Pitching coach Jason Stowers said, “The pitchers threw well, competed and I’m overall happy with the first game for the Bears.”
He explained that he loves the fall games because he gets to experiment with different guys and help them get better each day to prepare them for the spring.
The Bears competed at Alice Lloyd this Thursday, Sept. 18 and lost both games in the doubleheader which brings their record to 0-4.
