The University of Pikeville held its fourth annual Communication Alumni Panel on Saturday morning, Sept. 20. The guest speakers that came to explain what you can do with a communication degree were Lisa Compton, Brittany Rowe, Whitney Hogg, Haylee Combs, Josh McKinney, Jay Shepherd, and Tigh Compton. This event was organized by the communication department.
“This event has become a premiere event for our department. I cannot thank my outstanding alumni enough for their input and support. They really open students’ eyes to the possibilities available for communication graduates,” Chandra Massner, associate professor of communication, said.
Each of the panelists spoke not only about what you can with a communication degree, but also gave some advice as to how to successfully make it through the communication classes at UPIKE. The position that each of the guests have they obtained thanks to their communication degree from the UPIKE.
The alumni hold jobs ranging from coaching to working at a non-profit organization to being a sports broadcaster. Hogg works at Pikeville Medical Center and talked about how broad the communication degree really is.
“I never imagined working in the medical field,” she said.
The alumni spoke a lot about the importance and value of internships. Each of them explained their interning experience, and many of them talked about internships that are available with their current organization.
The panel helps many communication students realize how much there is available with the degree.
