UPIKE improves WiFi for students across campus
0Got Wi-Fi? The University of Pikeville Wi-Fi network access has improved and is continuing to improve across campus.
The students, faculty, and staff have been able to use two different types of Wi-Fi connections for the past several years, ResNet and Pcnet2000. The information technology department decided that the connections needed a more secure upgrade.
The secure connections use encryption between the wireless drive and the access point. The system uses a dynamic pre-shared key setup that is assigned to each user account and is different for each user.
The list of new network connections includes: UPIKE-StartHere, UPIKE-Student, UPIKE-Staff, UPIKE-Faculty, and UPIKE-ResNet.
UPIKE-StartHere is the first network new devices connect to in order to be setup/configured for the network(s) assigned to you. UPIKE-Student, UPIKE-Staff, and UPIKE-Faculty are secure connections to the main Wi-Fi network for students, staff and faculty while on campus. UPIKE-ResNet is a non-secure Wi-Fi network for dorm residents to connect their devices while in the residential halls.
ResNet and Pcnet2000 are no longer supported by UPIKE. ResNet will be removed from the residence halls by the end of March. Pcnet2000 will be removed from the non-academic buildings by the end of March and will be completely removed by end of the Spring 2014 semester.
In order to use: Browse your Wi-Fi connections and choose UPIKE-StartHere. If a browser did not automatically open, then open your Internet browser. It should automatically open to https://zonedirector.upike.edu/activate. If it did not, type the URL into the address bar. Type your UPIKE username and password, the run the file downloaded.
